Bobby Calf Awareness Day 2026

Every year in Aotearoa New Zealand, nearly two million calves are taken from their mothers at just four days old and sent into the slaughter system as unwanted by-products of the dairy industry.
Under current regulations, these calves can legally go without food for up to 24 hours before they are killed.
This Bobby Calf Awareness Day, we’re going without food for 24 hours in solidarity with them.
From midday Sunday 30 August to midday Monday 31 August, we’ll be fasting together to shine a light on what happens to these vulnerable calves – and to stand in solidarity with those who have no choice.

Most importantly, consider what keeps this system going. These calves are a consequence of an industry built around producing milk for humans. Choosing plant-based alternatives means choosing not to support the cycle that sees calves separated from their mothers and sent away at just days old.
Twenty-four hours is little to ask for those given so little time.
